On August 9, 2024, the FDA made the decision not to approve MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD. However, I am living proof that MDMA-Assisted Therapy (MDMA-AT) is safe, effective, life-changing, and even life-saving. By not approving MDMA-AT, the FDA is risking the lives of the 13 millions Americans suffering from PTSD

After surviving sexual and domestic violence as a child and as an adult, I suffered with debilitating PTSD, driving me to attempt suicide. Fortunately, I was given the opportunity to participate in a clinical trial for MDMA-AT. In just three sessions, what used to feel like a tsunami of overwhelming panic became merely a puddle at my feet.

None of my previous therapies had ever come close to unraveling my trauma as MDMA-AT. I am disappointed and enraged that the FDA has chosen to prevent millions of other Americans like myself, particularly survivors, from regaining resilience and improving the quality of life that was robbed from them. Instead, their lives will continue to be in jeopardy every single day.

They made a choice that would change the lives of millions of sexual assault and domestic violence survivors. We must stand together, as we have in the past to make monumental strides– survivors, advocates, practitioners, and allies – to demand healing with this breakthrough therapy.

Please continue supporting individuals like Christiana Musk and so many others who deserve the choice to heal. Please contribute to MAPS.org and/or Protea Foundation so we can change how we heal from trauma.

Give Survivors Hope for Healing

There is an urgent need for new PTSD treatments for survivors of all kinds. Nearly one in three women nationwide have experienced some form of contact sexual violence in their lifetime, the majority of whom experience PTSD. For nearly 25 years, there have been no innovations in approved PTSD treatments, while survivors remain 10 times more at risk of attempting suicide than those who haven’t experience sexual assault. It’s time to prioritize effective treatments like MDMA-assisted therapy to give survivors a chance to address their trauma and improve the quality of life that was robbed from them.

Supporting Survivor Organizations

Nationwide, 81% of women reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment and/or assault in their lifetime. At the Protea Foundation, along with partner organizations, we are working to give all of those women, and all survivors of sexual violence, a chance at recovery. For the 13% of women who are raped that attempt suicide, this situation is all the more dire.  MDMA-AT is a tool for navigating trauma, giving people a chance at healing, just as the protea flower thrives and perseveres after wildfires. This therapy can help women find the deserved strength to bloom again.
